Chronic Wasting Disease and Hunting
With hunting season in full swing, some big game hunters have their minds of Chronic Wasting Disease. Some are concerned about the health of the animals they are hunting, while others who may have missed out on draws are looking for additional hunting opportunities.
Sustainable Resource Development website lists hunting opportunities and provides news and updates on Chronic Wasting Disease:
This summer, girls and boys age 12-17 were invited to apply for the Wilderness Mentorship Program. This program matches local youth with experienced hunters, who help guide them through the licensing process, accompany them to the shooting range and arrange their first hunting experiences.
“We’re really excited about providing this opportunity to young people in the area,” says Julie Desrochers, Public Information, Education and Outreach Programs officer for the Peace/Upper Hay Management area. “The mentors are doing an amazing job. They’re teaching the youth a respect for wildlife and the area’s natural resources that they might not have developed otherwise.”
The Wilderness Mentorship Program is a shared initiative of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, the Hunting for Tomorrow Foundation and the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association. This is the first year the program has been offered, and so far the response has been very positive. It will be reviewed at the end of the year and then a decision will be made regarding its future.
